Hey, there! This is a comparison between Redmi Y2 and Redmi Note 5.
These two phones are priced very closely, are from the same brand and they’re literally trying to bite each other off. So, let’s see which of these phones is the right pick for you.
Redmi Y2 is sold exclusively online on Amazon, in two variants. Base variant is priced
at 10,000 rupees for the 3GB RAM | 32GB ROM and the next variant is priced
at 13,000 rupees for 4GB RAM | 64 GB ROM.
Redmi Note 5 is sold exclusively online on Flipkart, in two variants. Base variant also starts at 10,000 rupees for 3GB RAM | 32GB ROM and the next variant is priced at 12,000 rupees for
4GB RAM | 64 GB ROM.
Looking at the price, you might think Redmi Note 5 has better value for money, but what these phones actually offer are completely different. So, let’s start off with the similarities
and then check out the differences.
The first thing that is very similar, would be the processor. Both phones pack a Snapdragon 625 processor with Adreno 506 GPU and just like you can imagine in terms of performance
and day to day usage both phones are exactly same, whether it is app load time
or the memory management you will get the exact same performance on both phones.
Both phones come with all the basic sensors including Compass, Gyroscope, LED Notification light, a fingerprint scanner on the back and an IR blaster at the top. They support dual SIM with 4G LTE and you can make and receive video calls using the phone dialer on both phones.
Audio department:
Audio experience on the headset is same on both phones it’s pretty average nothing good or bad to talk about. Speaker loudness is the same. Besides that both phones come with micro USB charging port and the same 10 watts power adapter in the box.
So, those were the similarities. Here are the differences:
In terms of design and build both phones are completely different. Redmi Y2 comes with a plastic build and fake antenna bands at the top and bottom, with a nice matte finish on the
Back. It fits comfortably in the hand and fingerprints are not easily visible because of the color. It is slippery but, thankfully we get a free case in the box. It doesn’t offer you any kind of
drop protection but it will give you a nice grip. Unlike the Redmi Note 5 this one has
a flat display on the front and there is no 2.5D curved glass and it is not from Corning. But, because of the flat display, it’s much more easy to find a good tempered glass for it so that’s like an advantage. Now, this one weighs 170 grams without the case and with the case it
weighs around 185 grams. That’s definitely not light in weight.
Redmi Note 5 has a regular industrial design with a metal back panel and a plastic strip on the
top and bottom for antennas, with a nice matte finish on the back with some Anti-Fingerprint coating. Even though it has Anti-Fingerprint coating, because of the black color it does attract some smudges and it does get ugly over time. Even this one is slippery and we get a free case
in the box. On the front, it has a 2.5D curved Corning Gorilla Glass and on the whole, it definitely looks premium in terms of looks than Redmi Y2.
It weighs 180 grams without the case and around 200 grams with the case. So, when you hold both phones in the hand, Redmi Y2 will definitely feel more light in weight.
In terms of design and build, Redmi Note 5 definitely looks better and feels premium but it is
slightly on the heavy side. Design and build are always a personal preference, so you can pick the best one based on your choice. But, if you want a phone that looks premium, Redmi Note 5 is the winner. If you want a phone that feels light in weight, then Y2 is the winner.
Hardware section:
Phones have all the basic sensors. Fingerprint scanners on both phones are equally fast and there is no problem, but Redmi Y2 comes with the additional face unlock feature which is
missing on the Note 5. Once again, face unlock is not as secure as the fingerprint scanner and it isn’t even fast as fingerprint scanner especially in the low lighting conditions. Despite all that cons, Redmi Y2 is still offering you the face unlock feature, which is missing on the Note 5.
The SIM card trays of both phones support dual SIM with 4G VoLTE, where we can make a nice video call directly using the phone dialer. But, Redmi Y2 has a dedicated SD card slot which the Note 5 doesn’t. So, in terms of value for money at a price tag of 10,000 rupees, Redmi Y2 is definitely a better choice.
Display department:
Both phones come with the similar sized display but different resolution. Note 5 comes with a Full HD+ resolution display, while the Redmi Y2 comes with a HD+ resolution. Individually, both
are good and for regular day-to-day usage you can even call it as a tie. But, if you are someone who likes to play a lot of games on your phone then Redmi Note 5 will be better because of the additional pixels. On Redmi Y2, especially with games like Asphalt 8, Modern Combat 5, you can definitely see the lack of pixels on this phone. It’s still usable and it looks pretty good
but it won’t be as good as the Note 5.
Even in terms of picture quality like color reproduction, Note 5 has the better display. So, in the display department Redmi Note 5 is definitely better.
Cameras:
Camera Specifications:
Redmi Y2
Rear: 12 megapixel (f/2.2 aperture, 1.25μm) + 5 megapixel, gyro-EIS, LED flash.
Front: 16 megapixel, HDR, LED flash.
Redmi Note 5
Rear: 12 megapixel f/2.2 aperture, phase detection auto-focus, dual led dual tone flash.
Front: 5 megapixel 1080p.
After looking at the specifications of both the phones, front-facing camera is definitely better
on the Redmi Y2. It has a wide-angle lens so you get wider selfies, it takes better selfies
even in bad lighting conditions and also supports auto HDR for taking selfies. Now that’s not all, we can also take Portrait selfies from the Redmi Y2 while we can’t on the Redmi Note 5.
The rear cameras once again are better on Y2. First of all, it has a dual camera setup so you get to take portrait shots which is a feature missing on the Redmi Note 5. Besides that Y2 also has Auto HDR for the rear camera which actually works pretty well, so once again the rear
cameras are better on the Redmi Y2.
On Note 5 we can record video in 4K resolution and that’s the only good thing about it. On Y2 it has Electronic Image Stabilization, so compared to the Note 5, footage on Y2 is more
stable and more usable. So, on the whole, in the camera department Redmi Y2 is definitely way better than Redmi Note 5.
Software Section:
Both phones are running a custom skin version of Android called MIUI version 9.5. Y2 is
based on Android Oreo and the Note 5 is based on Nougat. So, in terms of software features you get almost the same set of features on both phones, but on Y2 you get the additional
picture in picture mode because of Android Oreo.
In the software department you can call it as a tie. But, because of Android Oreo and the latest update I’ll pick Y2 as the winner.
Battery department:
Redmi Y2 comes with a smaller 3000 mAh battery and doesn’t have any fast charging, while Redmi Note 5 comes with a bigger 4000 mAh battery and supports Qualcomm quick charging. So, if you have a fast charger lying around you can charge your Note 5 faster than Y2.
Battery life of Note 5 definitely wins because of the bigger 4000 mAh battery. On normal usage Y2 can definitely last you a day whereas Note 5 can last you about one and half days. In the battery department, Redmi Note 5 is definitely the winner.
To conclude, both phones are very similar at the same time offer you completely different things. Redmi Note 5 has a better display and better battery life but you have to compromise a lot in terms of cameras. On Y2, you get better cameras and most importantly a dedicated SD card slot, but display is its biggest drawback especially if you like to play a lot of games.
Out of these two phones if your budget is strictly under 10,000 rupees or if you want a phone with better cameras, simply go with Y2. If you don’t care about the cameras but want a
better display and better battery life, you can go with the Redmi Note 5. If you want
my suggestion, I’ll ask you to go with the 3GB RAM variant of Redmi Y2. You get really good cameras, good performance, battery life is not as good as the Note 5, but it is still pretty good for a day. You also get the dedicated SD card slot, so you don’t have to spend more money to
get more storage. Memory management on this phone is pretty good, so even 3GB of RAM should be sufficient for a very smooth usage for a long time.
